When it comes to Ram trucks, drivers have been able to enjoy premium towing, hauling, quality, and features for years. Going into the 2019 model year, there are two variations of the hard-working and capable Ram 1500: the all-new Ram 1500 and the Ram 1500 Classic. What is the difference between these two models? Which offers the best features and can-do attitude for drivers?
Each model in this 2019 Ram 1500 vs Ram 1500 Classic comparison offers plenty of value for drivers. While the all-new 2019 Ram 1500 has seen significant design, powertrain and feature upgrades for the new model year, the Ram 1500 Classic legacy models offers the capability of the previous generation. It delivers plenty of value for those seeking a practical work truck or commercial driving. You can compare the base Tradesman trim of both of these models in the chart below.
All-New 2019 Ram 1500 (Tradesman) | vs | 2019 Ram 1500 Classic (Tradesman) |
$31,795 | Starting MSRP | $27,395 |
Quad Cab (6 seats) | Base Body Style | Regular Cab (3 seats) |
eTorque 3.6-L V-6 (305 hp) | Base Powertrain | 3.6-L V6 (305 hp) |
20/25 mpg | Top Mileage (city/highway) | 17/25 mpg |
The 2019 Ram 1500 Classic has a significantly lower starting price than the all-new Ram 1500, but also prioritizes practicality over comfort. The Classic starts with a three-row, two-door Regular Cab body style, while the all-new Ram 1500 moves immediately to the four-door, two-row Quad Cab. These models have similar starting engines (though the new Ram 1500 will get better city fuel economy thanks to eTorque hybridization) and they are both available with a 5.7-liter HEMI V-8, though again the all-new model offers hybridized fuel savings. The 2019 Ram 1500 Classic will also offer the 3.0-liter V-6 EcoDiesel later in the model year. We are not sure at this time if this powertrain will be available on the all-new 2019 Ram 1500.
While the 2019 Ram 1500 Classic offers plenty of capability for the needs of commercial drivers and shoppers, there are advantages to the all-new 2019 Ram 1500. This model comes standard with the Uconnect infotainment system with a 5-inch display, hands-free calling, a year of complimentary SiriusXM radio, and multiple USB and power outlets. When properly equipped, the new model can tow up to 12,750 pounds (compared to approximately 10,620 pounds on the Classic variation).
Is the all-new or Classic 2019 Ram 1500 better for you?. The answer to that may come down to your individual needs as a truck shopper.
