When it comes to offering great value to discerning truck shoppers, the 2019 Ram 1500 is hitting all the right notes. This full-size truck delivers top value no matter the trim level, offers fuel-sipping eTorque engine technology, and is available with some of the best interior features in the class. But how does this all-new pickup stack up against the Toyota Tundra?
The 2019 Ram 1500 has a slightly higher starting price than the 2019 Toyota Tundra, but it comes out of the gate with premium capability. Even though the 2019 Tundra comes standard with a V-8 engine, it offers only 310 horsepower and 327 pound-feet of torque. The 2019 Ram 1500 comes close to that just with its base 3.6-liter V-6. Mated to an eight-speed automatic transmission, this engine offers 305 horsepower and 269 pound-feet of torque. However, that is far from the end of the capability that the all-new Ram 1500 offers.
2019 Ram 1500 | vs | 2019 Toyota Tundra |
$31,795 | Starting MSRP | $31,420 |
20/25 mpg | Top Mileage (City/Highway) | 15/19 mpg |
3.6-L eTorque V-6 | Base Engine | 4.6-L V-8 |
12,750 pounds | Max. Towing | 10,200 pounds |
Even though the V-6 base engine on the 2019 Ram 1500 offers similar engine output to the standard V-8 on the 2019 Toyota Tundra, it still offers the fuel savings that a truck shopper would expect from a V-6 model. Thanks to the eTorque system, it can even offer more value. While the base 2019 Ram 1500 can offer up to 20 mpg in highway driving and 25 mpg on the highway (which is better than any other gasoline truck on the road today) the Toyota option runs at 15 mpg in the city and 19 mpg on the highway.
The second-level engines of the trucks in this 2019 Ram 1500 vs 2019 Toyota Tundra comparison are the Ram’s 5.7-liter HEMI V-8 (available with or without eTorque electrification and rated for 395 horsepower and 410 pound-feet of torque) and the 5.7-liter V-8 on the Tundra (rated for 381 horsepower and 401 pound-feet of torque). Drivers of the 2019 Ram 1500 will be able to enjoy up to 12,750 pounds of trailering potential on V-8 models, while the elite V-8 of the Tundra option tops out at 10,200 pounds.
